Cornell Real Estate Council Returns to Campus
After a very successful three-part program on April 19th of this year, and one of the best conferences in CREC’s forty-year history, the CREC team returned to campus on Wednesday, November 2nd, for an evening program co-sponsored by CREC Women, CREC DEI, CREC Career Advisory Program – Career Circles and CREC Young Leaders.
The program, entitled “Never Thought About a Career in Real Estate” was oversubscribed within 24 hours of posting on Handshake. CREC’s target audience was students on campus who were unaware of the broad opportunities that the real estate industry o ffers, especially women and people of color. Excited by the results of the April 19th event, where many students walked into the room without any plans to join the industry and by summer had internships and full time positions with real estate firms, CREC returned this semester hoping to have similar results.
The audience at the November 2nd event was right in line with CREC’s goals. The room was filled with Environment and Sustainability, Engineering, Operations Research, Public Policy, Healthcare, Philosophy, ILR, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Government, Fine Art, Physics and Communication majors. Alan Riffkin and
Lynn Gray, both entrepreneurs, former bankers and CREC Board Members, Alvieno Stinson, an artist, Baker/AAP Graduate Student and Treasurer of the Philip Payton Society and Sasha Paikin, a Baker Graduate Student and President of the Association of Cornell Women in Real Estate all shared their own journeys within real estate so far.
At the end of the evening, the attendees who ranged from Freshmen through Graduate students commented that the event was one of the most informative they had attended at Cornell and left with a much better appreciation of opportunities for all of them within one of the largest industries in the world. Mission accomplished for the CREC Team.
CREC will be holding another similarly-targeted event during the Spring 2023 semester. For more information about that event, and CREC’s many initiatives, please contact Tyla Landry, our Administrative Coordinator at tyla@cornellrec.org.
